I recently attended the Helicopter Association International (H.A.I.)
Convention in Dallas. The FAA had a booth there with the WAAS
specialists answering questions. The man responsible for the
certification of IFR WAAS receivers gave me a personal explanation of
this system.
As of now the only certified receiver for WAAS and LPV approaches is the
Garmin 480. There are several receivers that will be approved soon but
this is the only one as of now.
I thought the Freeflight 1201 was in this category. In fact I have
already purchased and installed it in my Lancair ES. I was told NO the
Freeflight 1201 is not certified for LPV approaches by both the FAA and
the President of Freeflight. He said Freeflight was 100% focused on
finishing the systems that have been chosen to be installed in the
Eclipse Jet. Once this is completed then they will continue their work
to complete the certification of their other products. While it is
expected that the 1201 is not going to require any changes, and it
should be certified in its current configuration, it is not currently an
approved receiver by the FAA
The Freeflight 1201 was used in the proving work done by the FAA for
their purposes but it did not gain the certified status as of yet.
This information was as of late February 2006.

Kevin,
The system you describe is indeed appropriate for IFR There is no
issue
with that. But it is not "enroute" or "approach" GPS certified. And
that
would need to occur to file /G. Two options are a) install a
certified
GPS/nav/com (430, 530, 480 or the like); b) add the freeflight 1101
GPS
(this actually also gets you the precision GPS approaches).
I'm just curious, if people *without* certified GPS's are filing, /A,
/U, /R
or other.
My current plans are to just put the freeflight in and be down with
it.....
