Hello Lancairians,
Sue and I finally got back to Virginia last night
from our Central America adventure (with a week rest in Florida). It was a
fantastic trip, lots of fun and lots to learn. We had the opportunity to visit 3
major Mayan ruins sites; Palenque Mexico, Copan Honduras and Tikal Guatemala. We
took a boat down the Panama canal. We had an unexpected landing on a
little island off Panama. We met Rich Trickle (who molded the parts
for many of the early Lancairs) in El Salvador. He's working on a kit
down there for a scale P38! We traveled with a great bunch of adventurous and
fun pilots. Finally we learned a great deal about the people and culture of
Central America. I can't think of a better way to do a trip like this than in
your Lancair.
Here are the numbers for the trip:
16 legs from Fredericksburg, Virginia and back. The
longest 575 and the shortest 79 nm.
5,148 nm total distance traveled.
223.4 gallons of fuel burned.
31.6 hours total flying time.
163 knots average block to block
speed.
7.01 gallons per hour average burn.
23.0 nautical or 26.5 statute miles per
gallon.
We highly recommend a trip like this in your
Lancair. Contact us if you're thinking about planning such a trip. Here are
a couple of pictures.
