If I am at an unconrolled field, I = call at least one minute before and when at 1 mile on initial. It is my = responsibility to fit into the pattern so I don't expect anyone else to = have to do anything based on what I am doing. If that won't work, I = break off the approach and enter conventionally. If there is another = a/c in the pattern I will announce whether I will break and land in = front of him or enter downwind behind him. At a tower field, the tower = may give you the altitude for initial (which may be higher than pattern = altitude) and will tell you to break right or left and where to do it. Absent traffic conflicts or contrary instructions, I come in faster than = cruise and break left at the numbers. Power back, not all the way to = idle but fairly close, speed brakes out and 60 degrees of bank. Ten = degrees of flaps at 170 kts. Brakes in at some point depending on = progress. Gear down at gear speed and flaps full down. Aggressive back = trim during all of this process, which usually gets done just past the = 180. At that point, I reduce power to idle and adjust the turn to land = without touching the power. Works well if I don't mess it up. If I = have to break past the numbers, there will be a mini-downwind leg and = there is more time to get set up for landing. It may also be necessary = to carry power for a while.
