I had a Garmin 396 built into my panel.  The added benefit of going this way was the cost and if necessary I can fly the plane using only the 396.  Jim Cook at Palm Beach Avionics built (machined) the holder for my 396, above my 480 and com.  It is beautiful--not plastic.
