I received a prompt reply today from George Happ
at Matco. In the 17 years since the Lancair 235 kits
shipped with their cast caliper (or "puck housing"),
Matco has improved the design several times.

In his words:
----------- excerpt from Matco -------------
The current version of the PH-1 housing
(the PH-1A) is made from an extrusion.
It is also a gold anodize color.  It has
a slightly different profile but will
fit the same components as the earlier model.

The cast housings are susceptible to cracking
if over tightened.  The caliper in your photo
is at least two generations old.  The current
caliper housing is 0.75 inches thick and does
not have raised letters.

The brake assembly can be purchased without
the brake plate as the WHLB5.  I expect you
will find the following improvements from your
first generation assembly:

  1) The spacers on the current version are made
     from stainless steel.

  2) The stationary brake plate is steel so the
     caliper is stiffer.

  3) The housing is an anodized extrusion
     and not a casting.

  4) The lining formulation has changed several
times and is now semi-metallic that has
higher friction coefficient and holds it to
     a higher temperature.

The new parts can be seen at:

The current stock at Lancair Kit Components, as well
as at Matco is the newer PH-1A puck housing and
associated
assembly.

BTW, if anyone has recently replaced their LNC2 brakes
with the version from Grove, and would like to sell
their lightly used caliper assemblies, please let me
know....
I also have a neighbor who could use a pair of Matco
disks.
