I have read that the Luftwaffer experimented with not only polished the wings, but also applying paper over the nose of the wings with wax. An electric resistance wire in the wing was then energized once the aircraft had climbed above the bug levels. This melted the wax, releasing the paper and exposed the polished surface without the addition of bug splatters accumulated during climb out.
