I have owned two Glasair IRGs and at the time of the Lancair purchase owned a Glasair IRG insured with AVEMCO and a pressurized Cessna 340 insured with another insurance company. I have 3,000 hours with a commercial pilot, airplane single engine and multiengine land, instrument airplane and rotorcraft-helicopter rating. Three months prior to the purchase of the Lancair IVP I completed a one week course at SIMCOM on the Cessna 340. I applied to AVEMCO to insure the Lancair IVP with $280,000 hull value. They quoted about $12,000 annual with $25,000 deductible in motion. What a shock! Fortunately, I heard about Travers & Associates in St. Louis, MO (John Travers 800-888-9859). They fixed me up with USAIG at $6,300 annually and threw in my Glasair IRG for an additional $1,400 (AVEMCO Glasair premium was $2,300 annually). The Lancair IVP in motion deductible is only $250 (100 times less than AVEMCO). Obviously, our pilot experience is different and you probably will have to pay a little more for similar coverage. I feel that the Lancair IVP is a safe single engine aircraft with excellent handling and landing characteristics; apparently Travers & Associates have been able to educate insurance underwriters on this point. AVEMCO seriously needs competition in the experimental aircraft insurance market.
