Ed,

Thanks for the response.  I did happen to read the next page of the manual
after I posted the question and it answered my question too.  Guess I'm
still getting caught by the fact that the manual tells you what to do and
then tells you how to do it afterwards in a few spots.  I do have some
interference with the gas strut and the pivot bolt of the linkage.  That's
because I have a washer on the bolt head side of the assy.  I put one there
because I'm finding that a lot of the bolts are longer than they need to be
and usually end up with 5 or 6 threads showing or have some minor slack with
castle nuts.  I found in Bengilis' book that you can have up to 3 washers on
the nut side of the bolt, so I'm going to disassemble and reassemble with
the washers configured differently.  I also need to use 5 washers to get the
right spacing on the bolt that the gas strut attaches to.  The manual states
that you should use no more than 4.  But, if I only use 4 washers, then I
have too much slack on the bolt between the washers and the castle nut
again.  So, tonight I'm going to reconfigure things and if my calculations
are correct, I should have no interference and the cylinder of the gas strut
should have between 1/16 and 1/8 inch clearance from the linkage pivot bolt.

Thanks to you all!
