Since the gas strut is under constant pressure and pushing both ways, it lends itself to ball/socket joint at the top attach point. I will make the socket on my lathe and milling machine. The socket will be bolted to the firewall at the top, in a permanent fashion. The ball will simply fit up into the socket and held into the socket with the cylinder pressure when the lower end is bolted to the over center link. If one does not have access to machining equipment simply press a pin through the bolt hole at the top of the gas spring and fashion a saddle fitting for the pin to rest in at the top. Create the saddle so it captures the pressed-in pin so as to keep it from working out one side or the other. When done this way there is only one bolt/nut to remove to allow the gas spring to be removed. When that one bolt is removed, at the over center link, the gas strut can be simply dropped down. To reinstall....the top of the gas strut is placed into the socket or saddle and the bottom bolted to the over center link. Reinstall the forward attach point of the link and you are done. Let the gas pressure work for you and don't fight it.
