I agree with your assesement. If you need the Zetex, spray adhesive won't
keep it in place. I had pretty good luck with carefully trimming the pieces
to shape--you don't need to cover the entire inside of the cowl--and
fastening them with high-temp silicone. A few strips of silicone sealant
about an inch apart should hold it nicely. I finished the edges by carefully
running a bead of silicone around the perimeter of the Zetex, then applying
the "doped" Zetex to the cowl, then running a strip of electrical tape
around the perimeter to hold it down and make a finished edge. If you're
careful with the gooey stuff, and careful to lay it in the proper position,
the result is very secure and looks good.

Stay away from the spray adhesive for this application!
