I am finding the
discussion on Lorn Olsen's flight with a dead battery to be a bit too
judgmental with regard to the operation being unsafe, as under some
circumstances it is not unreasonable to fly an airplane with inoperable
equipment.
I would be curious
to learn if the FAR's for experimental airplanes would have permitted Lorn's
flight, and do the laws provide for the establishment of an Minimum
Equipment List? If so, has one been developed?
In my lifetime I
have flown with a number of "by-the-book" pilots, professional and amateur, who
have scared the bejesus out of me through thier lack of skill, awareness, and
good judgment. Unfortunately, far too often Darwin's natural
selection process seems to be the ultimate arbiter of these
deficiencies.
The simple fact is
that there are people flying Lancairs who shouldn't be doing so for a number or
reasons.
