I used Radio Shack LEDs.
Red #276-068
Green #276-069
They need a resistor in series. Switching between day/night brightness is accomplished by shorting out one of two resistors in series. After the dimming resistor, the circuit actually splits into four parallel paths, one for each LED + second resistor. I don't recall the values I used (have already promised to check when I get a chance), but I would start with 1k ohm and work up and down until the brightness level looks good.
