Doug,  I won't worry about what is acceptable practice as long as its not a
change to the basic aircraft structure.  In Homebuilts, almost anything is
"acceptable practice".  You be the judge.  Does it work?  Is going to be
reliable over an extended period.?  Does it look good?

This is why so many innovative new designs come out of Experimental
aircraft.  We are free to experiment.
