The highly portable, recently released XM Satellite Radio, My-Fi, fit the bill beautifully.
When you get bored by that, you can move up to Sirius Satellite Radio.  Excellent programming (I say that from experience), much much much better than XM programming (comparing notes with XM owners).

That said, I have no clue about what hardware is available that will fit nicely in an airplane.
