I tilted my stick in another 10 or 15 degrees to gain a little space for my knuckles. On cutting the sticks down, the ES takes some force to get it rolling. I remember at least one guy has cut his sticks down, but I would try to avoid it on an ES. I'm not familiar with the stick forces on a IV.
