One of the handiest new features on the Chelton 5.0 is the ability to
program a flight plan using Vxxx or Jxxx routing. This saves considerable
input and knob twisting. For example I planned recently a trip from San
Carlos, CA to Montrose, CO. The routing is virtually direct on V244. With
the Chelton it takes 3 waypoints: (Oakland, V244, Montrose VOR, then KMTJ)
With the Garmin 530 there are 13 waypoints incl intersections and vor's.
This is a huge time saver. Of course if you are lucky and receive all of
your clearances via direct, then this feature is moot.
