Yeah, I learned blackout landings in military flight school also.
Wait til your eyes get a little older.

In the flare, landing lights many times shine off into space.
Some STC'd planes I know of have two landing lights.  One shines ahead and the other is aimed to help more in the flare.
Maybe you could add on another lamp on the left gear leg aimed low.>
 
When I was taught to fly and training for my night rating, I was taught to land without the landing/taxi lights being turned on.  Learned to judge position by looking well down the runway and 'settling down'  between the runway edge lights by using the runway edge lighting well ahead of me.  I do use lights, but primarily for the 'be seen' reason.
