Bill,
Good Golly! What is a LASHO? Oh, you mean a LAHSO where one
may participate by LAHS.
Yikes Scott, I used to be dyslexic, but I'm KO
now!
No flames for you, just a hot water bottle.
How about a warm bottle of Scotch
instead?
Land 15 and hold short of 9 or land 9 and hold short of 18. Piece
of cake. I think I've got about 3500 feet in either case
Yep, not too many of us would have a problem getting
a Lancair down and stopped in 3500 feet. Like they say on TV, "but
wait...there's more". Once you accept a Land and Hold Short clearance, you
have accepted a RESTRICTION to LAND and Hold Short. 9,999 times
out of 10,000 there is no problem. But how about that time when you approach
at just the right speed, on profile, the weather is perfect...almost
calm, just a breath of a crosswind at 2 gusting to 3. You
flair in the touchdown zone, hold if off for that squeaker that you know is
coming and WHAM, your in the wake turbulence of that G-IV that landed and
taxied off before you were even on final. You're at 10 feet in a 45
degree bank. Think it might be time for a go-around? Sorry...you have
obligated yourself to LAND and hold short. You are not just cleared to
land, you have a restriction to LAND. Even on the go-around you can't legally
cross the hold short runway.
Is this scenario a long shot? You bet. Could it
happen? Of course. What are the chances of it happening on this landing?
Small... really small. What are the chances of it happening on one of your
next 1,000 landings? Somewhat greater. No matter how small, there is a risk,
legal or operational, that accepting this LAHSO clearance will bite you. That
is measured against the upside, i.e.; what you gain. As far as I can see, you
gain...nothing. So you're risking a small, but not insignificant downside
against a nonexistent upside. My bookie wouldn't take that bet, neither will
I.
it has been a quiet holiday period here on the LML. Weather has
been forcing RTITYO (Reject Takeoffs Into That Yuck Operations) on
me.
Yeah, especially considering that the recent
formation clinic got cancelled, we really need a good Lancair fly-out. How
about the Bahamas? Key West? San Diego? Mexico? Sue and I need a
break this winter from our IV building.
