I was working, dropping divers and the instructors parachute deployed while he was still in/on the a/c. It was a C-182 not a legacy..The mechanic figured the h-stab deflected well over 24". I think there was $30,000 damage to the a/c and the jumper?? well he lost his shoe. Long story but I jumped on the rudder pedal and he ended up catching the last 2" of the outer end of the stab with his heel. If he had contacted the a/c with anything more than his heel.. he probable wouldn't be alive.. the a/c would have been a smoking hole... and I'd have had one more skydive under my belt. Needless to say.. we was pretty shook up.. now as to closing speeds and jumpers. I've heard of it happening.. but never experienced a jumper in freefall even getting close my a/c... and don't want to either.. It's a pretty benign story compared to what some of you folks have gone through.. anyway.. the experiences we learn from. J.
