Well, Lynn,

I guess I was the victim of disinformation when Andy told me at Reno that the cowl inlets were much larger than stock…

Here is a picture of the “small” inlets on Race 33 - http://www.sportclass.com/2003_gallery_images/2003_7_lrg.jpg

Here is a picture of the “large” inlets on the factory Legacy - http://www.lancairlegacy.com/Gallery_images/Legacy_profile.jpg

Here are some pictures of the hole in the intercooler “clearance” blisters that Andy and Darryl “forgot” to close before the race - http://www.sportclass.com/2003_gallery_images/2003_4_lrg.jpg, http://www.avweb.com/newspics/Reno2004_g3_Greenamyer_AndyChiavetta.jpg, and here http://www.avweb.com/newspics/Reno2004_GreenamyerEngineMotto.JPG

Now, it is possible that the inlet area, for just engine cooling, on Race 33 is less than the inlet area on a stock Legacy. But, you have to adjust the stock inlet area for the air lost to induction air, which would result in a functionally smaller air inlet devoted to engine cooling. I mention this for the sake of discussion, although I don’t believe this is the case.

I appreciate the correction, however, on the use of ADI fluid and the spray bars.

Fortunately for all of us, there is almost always more than one way to accomplish any particular engineering goal. Each method has it plusses and minuses resulting in one solution out of a series of various compromises. I am not condemning the use of plenums any more than I am saying that George has the “only” solution to engine cooling. However, from the data I have seen so far, and to the extent of my engineering knowledge (which is rather limited, as I am not an engineer), I believe that most plenums represent a suboptimal solution to the many compromises inherent in cooling these beasts. On the other hand, I still think they look way cool and I remain very intrigued about their design and implementation.

Lynn, is this your cowling? http://www.lancair-builders.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=32&password=&sort=1&cat=504&page=1

I like what I can see so far. Do you have any more pictures of the installation further along?

I hope all these links worked.

Best Regards,

Mike
