Is the MC......sold in the paint departments of the "Home Improvement
centers, hardwares" good enough for composites clean-up?

Does any one have a handle on this MC?

Jerry Grimmonpre'

[I am no chemist but do know that some of the products sold as MC in
home improvement centers may, at times, contain other solvents as well.
While I don't think that acetone or toluene will have deleterious effects
on a cured epoxy composite structure, those particular solvents will not
flash off as fast as will straight MC.  If you notice that any other solvent
is included as a constituent of the MC which you purchase it would probably
be wise to allow more time before laminating to allow complete flash off
of these other components, or to lightly hit the cleaned surface with a blast
from a heat gun to assist in their evaporation.  DO NOT use so much heat
that you raise the temperature of the component, use only warm air, not hot.
Some folks use the warm air blast process on all of their cleaned surfaces to
insure that all of the MC has evaporated before proceeding with their
layups... I suppose it makes sense in colder climates, but down here in
sunny FL where my shop temp is usually 85F or better, I find that I need to
wash with MC several times as the stuff flashes off so fast I have some
doubts as to whether or not it was able to do its job.  (BTW, do not use any
cleaner which contains petroleum distillate solvents, as they are oil based and
will likely leave a residue.  But we all knew that already, didn't we. <g>)

Just some food for thought....        <Marv>      ]
