In the mid 80's, when I bought my first car radio/cassette/CD player to use
in my Cessna 172RG, I bought a Kenwood model that only had preamp outputs.
This gave me the correct output level and impedance to plug directly into the
intercom, and, since the unit had no power amps, I was not wasting power in
audio power circuits that I did not need. The current drawn by that Kenwood
approached one ampere when loading a CD, and only drew 400 ma (.4 amperes) at
all other times. I had to feed it through a voltage converter since the
172RG has a 24 volt system. I bought the Kenwood at Circuit City.

Harris Sullivan
