Subject: Insurance for the Lancair IV

We have a club of about 10 members who have built a Lancair 360 (now flying
with over 1100 TT) and we are now finishing a IV.  The IV will be a
non-Pressurized IO-550, certified all the way and built by a retired 30+
year A/P who is a precise and detailed craftsman.  One of our members who
has been an insurance agent for over 25 years, suggested that after all our
hard work on the IV we might have to sell it because only 3-5 of us will
qualify to fly the airplane for insurance demands.  This is a heartbreaker
for those of us who have devoted so much of our time and effort to get to
know this great airframe design and company.

Has anyone found, or listened to plausible speculation on whether insurance
for the IV will have more reasonable costs, flight experience requirements
and deductibles in the not to distant future.  Currently we are looking at
2000 hours flight time, 100 retract, initial and recurrency training yearly,
and a deductible of 25 thousand dollars.

How have others limited their risks and chosen to fly?

Also, how many IV's are currently flying, and how many are about ready to
fly to increase the insurance pool?
