Thanks for all the
responses. The general wisdom is that the Jim Weir-type foil antennas
aren't supposed to work inside a carbon skin, although one builder says they
do. I think I'll go for putting a foil antenna inside the rear part of the
center console. Might be a problem if the plane were to land upside down,
but otherwise it would be transmitting through e-glass and plexi.
Incidentally, the antennas
sold by Advanced Aircraft, or whatever they call themselves, look like fancy
($149) versions of Jim Weir's foil antennas, which cost maybe fifty cents and
work very well in the right circumstances.
