A few years ago Don Goetz  suggested that there is no real need for the ventilation from the rear since it is closed when the plane is pressurized.  The recent discussion on the flapper valve would seem to confirm this.

It would be interesting to know if anyone actually uses the system,  and, if so, when and what for.
