In order to preserve my engine, I left the shipping plugs in the exhaust ports and the plate at the base of the sump and filled the entire internal engine volume with oil.  Cylinders were filled through top spark plug holes.  I forget how many gallons it took to fill.  Lycoming even approved of the use of automotive oil for the purpose of preservation.
