Not too long ago there was considerable valuable information on this
site regarding cooling as it pertains to the Lancair 360 model. I am
hoping that some of you may be inclined to help me out with a response
to my issues.
I own a Lancair 360 that I bought (building another in the meantime)
from a gentleman who built the airplane in Canada. When I got it, it
had 2 oil coolers. During the U.S. airworthiness certification process,
the A&P I used to ready the airplane strongly suggested that one of the
coolers be removed. He said it was unnecessary and only added unwanted
weight. I reluctantly went along with him, which may or may not prove
to have been a mistake. Unfortunately I did not have very much flight
time in the airplane with the 2 coolers to know whether or not I would
have encountered overheating. For all I know I would have.
With the single cooler configuration, mounted to the firewall, fed
outside air via 3" scat hose, I am now encountering overheating issues
whenever I take off with the engine warmed up to 180 degrees of oil
temperature. If I get off with the oil temp at 130 degrees or less, I
do not have an issue, as I reach altitude before overheating is
experienced. I never experience overheating at straight and level (no
engine load), or even at climb to higher altitudes as long as I do it
gingerly. In short, any load applied to the engine is performed at the
risk of significantly high oil (240 degrees +) temperatures.
I will be very appreciative of any and all suggestions as to how I might
address my problem. Berni P Breen
