[What you need is a "Battery Tender".  Ted Noel bought one for his project long before I showed up to lend a hand, and I've been using it for the last several months to keep his batteries topped off while we're building and testing.  It's not a very expensive device, and offers some features that you don't even find on chargers that sell at 3 or 4 times the price.  You can check it out at http://batterytendervps.chainreactionweb.com/product_info.php?products_id=2.
