Angier,

Yes, absolutely crucial to remove all those resonant harmonic slow me
downs.  

Yes to your whole post.  I have grounded my shields together at the
whelen unit.  They are then wired directly to the battery terminal with
about a 12 AWG wire and have no noise from the whelen system.  Of
course, only ground the one end of the shield as "ground loops" have bad
possibilities.  As a matter of practicality I would be tempted to run
your shield and encased strobe cable all the way out into the rudder as
protection against abrasion.  Additionally it solves your noise concerns
near the antenna.  This might also eliminate one connector (failure
potential and weight savings :)) Sleaving of course is another
option.
