Fred Egli and I recently replaced the gear door sliders on his IV
because the tires were contacting the doors as they moved into the gear
wells. We used the thicker material now available from Vern.
To really see the action of the door sliders, you have to be inside the
plane watching as the gear goes up and down.
We added a secondary slider about 4" long which is at about 60 degrees
to the main slider and an inch or so aft. This piece takes the load
only during the first few inches of deployment. It opens the door
slightly sooner when the wheel is coming out and avoids having a side
load on the main slider. We found that the main slider height could not
be set to both open the door soon enough and allow the door to close
completely.
