This is the best news I have heard in a while. Having flown behind the
TKS System in a Mooney Rocket for the last 500 hours, I have had serious
concerns about this issue. I am based in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan,
right in the middle of the Great Lakes. I have run a lot of fluid through
the system (3 gallons today on a flight to Kansas City)and find it is
superior to anything available to GA aircraft.
I may have posted this incident once before, but it is worthy of my time
to post again. I was flying over CYS Wyoming in late November of 2001 and
had the system running at the low flow rate to conserve fluid. I was in
some nasty stuff and I started building ice on the counter weight of the
elevator (a known problem any 4P builder would be aware of, Mooneys are no
different). I turned the TKS up to high mode and in 5 minutes, the ice was
gone from the counter weight. The TKS will simply clean the entire
airframe, nothing I know of available for aircraft de-ice will give you this
feature.
Enough ranting, I have an airplane project in the garage waiting for my
attention.
