Dan,
I have the standard cowl on my ES,
which has a Lycoming IO-540 in it (comparable to the IO-550 in size and cooling
requirements). So far, I have no cooling problems at all. I did
add some exhaust tunnels on the lower cowl to allow more air through (see
attached photo). I cheated and used a Lycoming cowl for a Legacy as a
form, did 3 BID releases and bonded the tunnels onto my cowl with a
couple of extra BID.
Don't forget that the IV-P has
three intercoolers that draw a large volume of air from the baffling
area, which is the main reason they have larger inlets. Using
that cowl for a normally aspirated ES adds unnecessary drag in my
view.
