I am about to buy one, I am just weighing my options as to which one is the best value, speed, weight, and size for the money.

The key is the display:  Is the display bright enough to be usable in direct sunlight and dimmable far enough to not blind you for night operations.  What is the screen resolution?  Some of the tablet PCs use 640x480 pixel screens.  I doubt if you will be able to  see a chart well enough at that resolution to actually fly with it.  For reference, Northstar's CT-1000 which is STC'd in Gulfstream IVs for doing exactly what you are planning to do has an 800x600 pixel screen.  Many people complain that it does not have enough resolution, but it is good enough to get the STC.  Then there is the issue of the overall size.  Will you be able to put it somewhere in the cockpit with the thing open?  Think about size/access as you open the device and select a chart.  Is the keyboard functional in turbulence?

You can buy a one time VFR/IFR chart deal in a particular area for around 129.00 I believe.

And that is where you may have the biggest problem.  It is my understanding that the $129 is in addition to buying the program and one subscription for several times that.  Make absolutely sure about that aspect before you go too far in your search for the hardware.

Hamid
