Gary,
I don't feel too bad now. I also have the same
experience with primer three years old before final primer and paint.
Looks like we all suffer from the same dilema of shrinkage between the weave.
But there is a smooth surface with the clear coat. I suppose the only way
to eliminate this is to use single stage color which is thicker than the base
coat pigment paint to fill the weave and above the weave prior to adding
clear. This of course adds weight to the plane but how many of us can see
that miniscule weave pattern in the bright sunlight.
Someone told me once that the sign of a properly finished
aircraft was one where the finish was of light weight, properly trimmed and you
could see the fabric weave in the case of fabric or the glass weave in the case
of a glass plane. Looks like we have achieved that goal.
BTW, another thought. My cowling had some
pings where the glass and gelcoat were spider cracked like a windshield
ping. I sanded the gelcoat off, stop drilled the spiders, filled the holes
with flox, applied two bid glass on both sides of the cowling, did the body work
and painted. Now three years later those spider cracks have
reappeared. No mercy. no solution??????? is there???????
