I finally got around to ordering new struts for my canopy from McMaster-Carr Supply Company.   I took Ken's advance and requested 80 lbs each for the strut pressure.

Here's a copy of my on-line order:

Qty | Part Number/Description | Price | Shipping Info
+-------+-----------------------------------+---------------+--------------+

2 EA 9416K355 - Gas Spring With $11.39 EA today
Threaded Ends 6.30" Stroke
Length, 80 lb Force, M6 Male

5 EA 9416K86 - Nylon 10mm Ball Socket $1.13 EA today
End Fitting For Gas Spring With
Threaded Ends

Interestingly, I ordered the struts in the morning and was delivered and waiting for me when I got home that same evening, delivered from their NJ office (I live in NJ).

As Ken pointed out, you can also order the stainless steel ball socket for extra length, however, it cost about $10 @.  I ordred the nylon ball socket and installed a small nut at the ends of the strut before installing the ball socket.  This added about 1/4" to the overall length.

The end result of this order was struts about 1/2" shorter than optimum for my canopy and about 1 1/4" shorter than the original struts I purchased from Nieco.

The good news is that it works very well!!  The thing just pops open with very little encouragement.  Now I don't have to worry about my canopy hitting me over the head every time it's open...

Many thanks to Bob Jude and Ken Berkovec.
