Re: My current use of STEC 50, Garmin 430 and GPSS: Oops, I forgot another procedure.
My experience with the Skymaster's NavMatic A/P and the S-TEC (pre GPSS) led me to fly with the heading bug on the DG whilst watching the track on LORAN or GPS, respectively - this always gave me the best (consistent) track over the ground. Turns were either hand flown or accomplished with a twist of the bug using brain power to choose the timing of the turn.
Of course, with GPSS, little or no brain power is required - just monitor things so that you are sure the heading is for Paris, IL and not the other gay Paree (AR, TX, TN or the one with the Eiffel twr as a visual checkpoint).
