In addition to providing the necessary lubrication to the sliding and rotating parts, the oil is pumped and splashed on and through most of the engine, cooling those parts and dumping the heat to the air flowing through the oil cooler. Doesn't do much for the cylinder heads directly though, so some kind of liquid cooling up there would be beneficial, in my humble opinion. Dan Schaefer
