Re aviation vs automotive oil.

I am no expert but I remember reading somewhere that aviation oils have anti- foaming agents. That is all I know. As a kind working in a garage and service station environment; I remember that there were several types of petroleum products designed for specific uses and applications.  I suppose that aviation and automotive oils are also designed for their unique applications.  This may support the need to use aviation oils in our lycoming and continental engines.

As an aside, anti-foaming agents may also be in some automotive oils:   I can neither affirm nor deny this statement.

As for me, the oil issue in a lycoming engine has been resolved by the years of history, testing, and actual experience and use of proven products as well as appropriate bulletins regarding the recommended oils to use.  This gives me a certain peace of mind knowing that that element of a complex aircraft need not be explored for a more satisfactory solution by me.  This allows me to concentrate on other aircraft components such as loose aileron hinges, etc.

It is an interesting question, you pose, and perhaps an expert in petroleum products may have some knowledge to impart to us which may support our continued use in aviation oil.
