Regarding the discussion on the third wire (the "little black wire")
emerging frome the hydro pump, I remember vaguely a communication
from the factory quite a while ago that refutes their earlier
instructions to cut it off and tape it. I'm sure it described
that wire as as Oildyne does, i.e., a thermal ground cut-off. If
I remember right, it opens on over-temp and should be the return for your
pump-control relay coils. That way, if the pump gets too hot (like from
running on too long) the thermal protection will turn off the pump relays.
This should be able to be confirmed by the factory. I'm pretty sure I'm
right and if so, this feature should be hooked up in all our aircraft. But
memory being what it is, be sure to confirm with Lancair before doing any
rewiring. It sounds like a very good safety feature and could save the
pump one day - worth while as they're not cheap! And in my airplane, would
be a real SOB to even get at to remove!
Fly Safe,
