I just returned from Gallatin TN where I parked my Lancair next to a
Glasair, actually half a Glasair. The vertical stab was pointing to the
ground, the horizontals and elevators were just gone, fibreglass cloth was
waving in the slight breeze. The rear third of the plane was destroyed. It
had been the subject of a lightening strike.

I was told it happened about a month ago just where it sat in it's tie down
in a row of Cessnas and Pipers and not far from some very high all metal
hangars. Only the Glasair was hit. Scary stuff when you have taken comfort
in the idea that a hit will only make a hole in the skin. Seems our planes
have a special vulnerability here.
