I'm ready to finalize the installation of my main gear cylinder inboard
attach points but want to get a clarification or two. The manual calls for
a 13-3/4" distance between the cylinder attach point and the inboard
overcenter link attach point. I'm very close to that number (+/- 1/16) and
have the cylinders and rod ends adjusted so the cylinder bottoms out when
the gear is down (to keep from putting additional down pressure on the o/c
links) and have had to add a pair of washers to the acutating rod between
the end of the cylinder and the stop sleeve to allow me some adjustment in
the gear up position... I didn't see any sense in having the cylinder
bottom out at both ends and figured that the stop sleeve should actually
provide the gear up adjustment. I have about 1/8" of adjustment left on
the sleeve, and it stops the cylinder from bottoming out on the retract
stroke. Is this the proper setup? (I asked another local builder who's
completed several Glasairs what he thought about my setup, and thought that
it made the most sense.)
It would have been much easier if Lancair had said "the cylinder should
bottom out when the gear is extended and the stop sleeve should be setup as
the gear up stop. Allow +/- 3/16" for the range of adjustment in the gear
up position." At least then you could figure out just how far to screw the
rod end on, & locate the cylinder where it needs to be to allow for that
much adjustment, etc.
Or am I being cranky again? <g>
