Two years ago there was an article in Flying Safety magazine (US Air
Force) about a turkey buzzard strike and a C5.  You would think that the
buzzard would be the big loser as it slammed through the fuselage just
under the nose, but it was the C5 that sustained a million dollars worth
of damage.  It could have been worse however, without the quick action
by the pilot the bird would have entered the cockpit.

Anyway, the lesson in the article was most birds will tuck and dive when
threatened.  So the avoidance procedure is to turn and climb BEHIND the
bird.
