Regarding soldered connections, specifically butt splices, you might try
using a solder sleeve. A solder sleeve is a nifty little item that combines
heat shrink, solder, and sealant all in one small unit.

Slide a solder sleeve over a wire
Strip the wires
Wrap them together
Slide the sleeve over the bare wires
Heat (I use a very hot air gun)
Wire splice is soldered, insulated, and sealed
