Pat:
Where in the world are you coming from?
<snip>
Ok, ok. You are legally correct. Whether I'd consider such a flight in an
airliner has nothing to do with this discussion. [et al.]
<snip>
It has everything to do with the discussion because you might be going
for your final ride and I bet you'd want a perfect airplane if you were
paying. Just because the PIC has the call on the airworthiness of his
airplane doesn't give him license to use poor judgment. This was a bad case
of "Gethomeitis." If your airline pilot had the same problem he could be
taking one or a hundred people to their death in the event his judgment
wasn't up to par, same thing here. Getting through a "Delta Sierra" like
this on Lady Luck is hardly confirmation of good judgment. Have I ever
gotten away with something like this, yes I have. Was I stupid, yes I
thought so! Did I learn, yes, again. Too many accidents happen with
airworthy airplanes, why take a less than perfect airplane up? I wouldn't
be so hard on the regs. The FAR's are pretty much written in blood. But
you're right on one count. You can't legislate against bad judgment, but
you can learn from it. I remember a posting in Operations at El Toro MCAS.
"The superior pilot is one who uses his superior judgment to keep himself
out of those situations that may require his superior flying skills."
Maybe we all need to think about being "superior gentlemen" with this
list and ease up on the flaming and rhetoric.
Cheers,
Pete
