Pat,
You are on target regarding pilots continually making judgement calls. This
judgement call is one of the worst that I have read about in a long time. The
fact that the flight was completed without loss of life is nothing short of
incredible-- but the pilot should not be admired for it. The pilot should
have his certificate jerked for doing this. If you did it in a 747 you would
be summarily fired. This wasn't a must go combat flight, it was recreational
flight.
My opinion regarding the author's boast about making a multi thousand/ multi
leg flight with a taped up window and an inoperative trim system most of it
over the North Atlantic remains the same: this guy will not live long in
aviation making these kinds of dumb decisions. I earn a great income from
guys like this who take unnnecessary risks-- far more money than I make as an
examiner. I see this stuff every day.
Unfortunately the jury here is split. I just hope the younger, less
experienced impressionable people on this list don't think this is the way
you should operate.
