After we bought our 360, I felt that I wanted the damping that a shock
gives to help with the high speed of landing of the plane. I chose John
Spry's shocks, even though a bit heavier, because I felt that even if
the shock failed, I would still have the springs themselves carrying the
load and then at that point the performance wouldn't be much different
than the original rubber shocks. If I understand correctly, if Ong's
Debongers lose pressure, you'd be low (prop clearance would suffer),
and you wouldn't even have springs, except what is available from the
tires.
Since I transitioned from a Thorp T-18, I was used to 'springy,' but
there was more height to play with and lower landing speeds. The
Lancair just seemed too light on its feet for me, and I feel that the
shocks have been beneficial in making the plane seem to settle down
better on landing.
