Small tail, big tail, long and short engine mount and custom. Original trim system, modified trim, internal trim and external trim tabs. Landing shocks are soft rubber donuts, hard rubber donuts, oil air oleo and shocks with spring assist. Original wing and long wing tips. Standard grocery cart wheels and larger outback wheels. Canopies that open on parallel arms and forward hinged. Most have header tanks, but some do not. Batteries and hydraulics pumps have been placed at the firewall, behind the seats and aft of the bulkhead. Fuel ranging from 43 gals to 54 or more. Engines - Carbureted and injected. Turbocharged and not. Lycoming 320 and 360 with some model variations. Other engines have or are being used (i.e. Marv's whirligig rotary). Horsepower ranging from 160 to 220 and more if turbocharged. Props - Fixed pitch, heavy Hartzell constant speed (CS), lightweight MT CS and others. Some have added harmonic dampeners for more forward weight and smoothness. Empty weights from 1100 pounds to 1260. Gross weights to 1800 (I have flown my 1200# EWt, small tail, short mount, 170 HP I/O 320, Hartzell CS...etc, at 1960# GWt). Load - Pilot's weights and sizes from 150 lbs to 250, heights from 5'5" to 6'1". Passengers may have more variance and may not necessarily be human. Baggage contents are at the pilot's discretion. There are no particular differences in the airframes -- same spars, load pads and layups. Each one has been over designed and over built. The engine mounts have taken every abuse possible and have only failed (that I know of) from nose wheel shimmy problems. Take all of these items and mix them in every combination -- What have you got? Fickle Flying Fandangos that are darting about all over the world and are loosely referred to as Lancair 320/360s. Do not worry about gooping up the elevators as long as you balance them. Do not worry about 200 ponies perking up front as long as you watch the CG range. Do not worry grasshopper -- build it well and it will fly. Over train yourself so that you too can land on the back of a moving flat bed truck -- it has been done. However, other than good aviation practices, examine everything you do against these additional four tests: 1. Will it work in a high vibration environment? 2. Will negative G's have an adverse affect? 3. Can it stand temperature extremes? 4. Can water get to it and will that screw it up?
