The voltage will drop below 13 volts when the alternator is not keeping up (or has failed. It is simple enough to have a low voltage warning light set for 13 volts.

You could easily rig a low volume "mosquito" buzzer or beeper to the master switch. Loud enough to notice when the engine is not running, but quiet enough to be completely drowned out by the engine noise.
