Very sad to hear this,  my sympathy and best wishes to Ian.  Hope he is back in the saddle again soon.
 
 
 
 It's possible I misunderstood the explanation but the theory of why this happened seems unlikely.  The sudden expansion of coolant would have to be incredibly fast to cause an overpressure due to not being able to get out through the overflow tube fast enough.

I didn’t think so myself. Looks like the hose just blew?

It sounded like what happened to my water pump inlet hose on my test stand one day.  It blew off during a test run simply due to the hose clamp not being tight enough.  Was using that clear nylon reinforced hose which takes a while to seat in and requires re-tightening until it does.   My bad, but it reminded me to check the one on my plane regularly.

I’m planning to use spring loaded hose clamps. They maintain the same clamping force regardless of material shrinkage or expansion.
