Either would work; both involve added > potential leak points. > > Al Gietzen > FWIW, don't most automotive dipsticks only indicate the top 2 quarts? full add (1 qt low) bottom of stick (about the same linear distance below the 'add' mark) If the oil level is more than 2 qts low, you can add a qt & recheck. Of course, there might be other problems if it's gotten that low. Charlie England
